India Second Team In Men’s Cricket History To Be Ranked No. 1 Across Formats

India have displaced Pakistan from the top of the men’s ODI rankings to become the number 1 team in this format of the sport ahead of the ODI World Cup at home. The Men in Blue consequently now occupy the numero uno position in the rankings in all the three formats, given that they were already the number 1 side in Tests and T20Is. This is a historical feat as the team becomes just the second one in the history of men’s cricket to achieve the ultimate ranking across formats at the same time. The only other team to have achieved the feat is South Africa who achieved the distinction in 2012.

India became the number 1 ODI side on the planet following their 5-wicket victory over Australia at the Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali on Friday. Having said that, it could be a short stay for them at the top of the rankings if Australia manage to win the remaining two matches of three-match series which happens to be their last bilateral affair heading into the marquee event.

It is pertinent to note that all India, Pakistan and Australia have been in contention for the top spot in the men’s teams rankings this month. While the Babar Azam-led side had that spot after Asia Cup even though they exited from the Super Four stages. Australia were in with a chance and had even taken a 2-0 lead in the five-match series against South Africa but then lost three matches in a row to lose the series 2-3. On the other hand, India have taken massive strides after winning the Asia Cup and then going on to start the Australia series on a winning note.

Other than the men’s teams rankings, it is Indians who are also shining in the individual rankings with four players from the side in that position across formats. While Suryakumar Yadav is the No. 1 batter in T20Is, Mohammed Siraj recently regained the No. 1 bowler ranking in ODIs. In Tests, R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja are at the top of the bowling and allrounder rankings respectively.
