ODI World Cup 2023: Former India cricketer Yuvraj Singh has offered his perspective on India’s ongoing dilemma concerning the number 4 batting position. The 2011 World Cup winner has suggested that India should make a definitive choice between KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer for the crucial number four batting position and refrain from frequent changes during the ODI World Cup 2023 tournament. India has struggled finding a consistent number 4 batsman for an extended period, with several players being tried out, but none managing to secure a permanent spot, often due to issues related to poor form or injuries.
Fit-again Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul both are the most promising candidates for the crucial number 4 slot.
“So whoever between KL and Iyer bats at No. 4, I don’t think India should chop and change anymore because both are coming back from an injury and both need game time,” Yuvraj said.

Ever since making his comeback from the injury, KL Rahul has shown significant improvement in his batting. While batting at number 4, Rahul boasts an impressive average of 60.13, and even at No. 5, his average remains noteworthy at 50.44. India’s first-choice wicketkeeper KL Rahul scored 169 runs across three innings with a jaw-dropping average of 84.50, playing a crucial role in India’s success during the continental tournament.

Senior India spinner R Ashwin, who initially wasn’t picked in India’s ODI World Cup 2023 squad, made a last minute entry by replacing injured Axar Patel. Many fans and cricket experts called it a smart move but Yuvraj Singh feels that Washington Sundar should have been picked instead of Ashwin.
“With Axar not there, we have to wait and see who will bat at No. 7. I was thinking if Washington Sundar would have played in place of Axar then India would have had another left-hander. But unfortunately, he did not get picked, and so did Yuzvendra Chahal. But otherwise, I feel the combination is fine,” Yuvraj said in a chat with Hindustan Times Digital.
