Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) became the second team in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season to surpass the 270-run team total. They now hold the second-highest IPL total after posting 272-7 in 20 overs against the Delhi Capitals (DC) on April 3 (Wednesday) at the Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam.
Just days prior, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) achieved the highest-ever IPL total by scoring 277-3 in 20 overs against Mumbai Indians (MI) in Hyderabad. This feat shattered Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) long-standing record of 263-5 in 20 overs against the now-defunct Pune Warriors India (PWI) back in IPL 2013. Now, KKR have surpassed RCB’s record to claim the title of the team with the second-highest IPL total, posting 272-7 in 20 overs.
Sunil Narine’s Blitzkrieg Took KKR Off To Flier
It all began with Sunil Narine exhibiting an impressive batting display, achieving a half-century in just 21 deliveries for his team, batting first against DC. Once again positioned as an opener alongside Phil Salt, the all-rounder showcased sublime form as he dismantled the DC bowling attack.
KKR achieved the first 100 runs in just the seventh over as Sunil Narine and Angkrish Raghuvanshi looked unstoppable for the DC bowlers. However, Sunil Narine’s aggressive innings concluded on the third delivery of the 12th over, bowled by DC’s Mitchell Marsh, as he edged a short-pitched delivery to wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant. Angkrish Raghuvanshi, making his IPL debut, too delivered an outstanding 54-run knock from just 27 balls before being dismissed by Anrich Nortje.
Just when it appeared that things were calming down for the Delhi Capitals’ bowlers, Andre Russell arrived and scored 41 runs in just 19 balls before getting out in the last over, accompanied by Rinku Singh’s brief cameo of 26 runs off 8 balls. With the score of 272/7 in 20 overs, KKR are now also the team with the fifth-highest total in overall T20 cricket.
