Mumbai Indians (MI) vs Chennai Super Kings (CSK)- is one rivalry that is regarded as the biggest of them all in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The 2024 edition of the cash-rich league happens to be the seventeenth season of the tournament and these two sides have won ten titles between themselves. Even though it is MI who have a better head-to-head record, in 2024 it was CSK who got the better of MI, beating them 20 runs in their only faceoff scheduled in the league stage of the competition.
But why are MI and CSK playing each other only once while some teams are meeting others twice. This is because of the format of the tournament. Not every team is playing every other team twice. The teams have been clubbed into two groups and a side is playing only teams of the same group in an home and away format. From the other teams, they will only play one team twice and the remaining sides just once.
IPL 2024: Groups And Format Explained
While MI are placed in Group A along with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Rajasthan Royals (RR), Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Delhi Capitals (DC). Chennai Super Kings (CSK) find themselves in Group B clubbed with Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Gujarat Titans (GT), Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). With CSK not being the team they take on twice from the other group, they will not be meeting the other time at least in the league stage of IPL 2024.
In case, both the teams qualify for the Playoffs of IPL 2024, there is a possibility of these two teams meeting again this season. As of now, MI find themselves at the eighth place with two wins from six matches while CSK are in the top half of the table with 4 wins and 2 defeats.
