The ongoing England vs Australia 1st Ashes 2023 Test still remains wide open with the match evenly poised and all results possible on the fifth and final day (Tuesday), June 20th. England bowled out the visitors for 273 in 2nd innings. Chasing 281-run total for the win, Australia were 107/3 at Stumps on Day 4 and require 174 more runs for the win on Day 5. Meanwhile, senior English batter Joe Root, who scored a match-defining unbeaten ton (118 runs off 152 balls) in 1st innings, managed to make just 46 in England’s 2nd innings. After end of day 4’s play, during the post-match analysis, ex-England captain Kevin Pietersen went ga-ga about how Root ‘owned the game’ with Australians ‘scratching their heads’. However, Aussie legend Ricky Ponting, who was standing alongside Pietersen, quickly shut him down on live camera.

“Joe Root owned the game. He ran the game, he was pure quality and he just owned that space, with (Australia) scratching their heads going ‘what do we do?” Pietersen said.
In reply, Ponting said: “Well, he’s out now. He got 40”.
