Even though an official confirmation regarading the women’s head coach’s appointment is still awaited, it is being reported that Amol Muzumdar, Tushar Arothe and Jon Lewis find themselves in the five-player shortlist of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). However, there is still no clarity on whether the name of the interim head coach Hrishikesh Kanitkar is also being considered. The Cricket Advistory Committee (CAC) appointed by the BCCI is expected to interview the candidates on July 1-2 in Mumbai. The CAC will be chaired by former India batter Ashol Malhotra but also comprises of former India players Jatin Paranjape and Sulakshana Naik.
The abovementioned details have come to the fore as per a report carried by ESPNCricinfo. The same report has claims that the three members of the CAC are likely to have a look at the presentations made by the candidates who have applied for the women’s head coach role before an official announcement is made on or before July 3. Furthermore, it is being learnt that the new coach will be given a two-year term initially with the individual set to be in charge of the team that takes part in the T20 World Cup in Bangladesh next year as well as the 50-Over World Cup in India in 2025.
It is pertinent to note that no full-time head coach of the women’s team has been appointed ever since the removal of Ramesh Powar in December 2022 due to the BCCI’s “restructuring module”. That decision had come two months before the T20 World Cup in South Africa. Since then, Kanitkar filled in for the role in the capacity of an interim head coach.
Meanwhile, India’s domestic cricket legend Muzumdar has also been offered the position of the head coach of the Baroda senior men’s side for the 2023-24 domestic season. However, he hasn’t given them their formal acceptance yet as he is waiting for the CAC’s decision after which he will be able to take a call.
