As per the ICC Code of Conduct, both India and Australia have been imposed a heavy fine for maintaining a slow over-rate during the World Test Championship final. The match ended on Sunday morning at The Oval in London where the Kangaroos ended up winning by 209 runs. The Indian team have been fined their full match fee for slow over rate while Australia will pay 80 percent of their match fees.
It happened because both teams were running 34 overs short during the final day of the ICC WTC final 2023.
“India have been fined 100 percent of their match fee and Australia 80 percent of their match fee for maintaining slow over-rates in the ICC World Test Championship 2021-23 Final.” While Shubman Gill has also been reprimanded for criticizing the umpire’s decision on social media and has been fined 15 percent of his match fee for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct.
Talking about the incident, Gill ended up edging a delivery off Scott Boland to the third slip where Green dived a bit and finished the catch. Australian team members started celebrating while Gill remained there in the middle and the umpire referred to it as the third umpire, Richard Kettleborough who finally declared him out after evaluating from different angles.
“India’s Shubman Gill will also face a sanction for appearing to criticise the decision to give him out on the fourth day of the Test, breaching article 2.7 which relates to public criticism or inappropriate comment in relation to an incident occurring in an international match. The young opener has been fined 15 percent of his match fee,” an ICC statement read.
“Television umpire Richard Kettleborough adjudged that a catch by Cameron Green to remove Gill had been taken cleanly. Gill took to social media later in the day to make a post that appeared to question the decision,” the statement added.
