Maxwell also formed a crucial partnership of 202 runs with Pat Cummins, who contributed 12 runs from 68 balls. Shastri drew a comparison between Maxwell’s innings and Kapil Dev’s iconic knock during the 1983 World Cup against Zimbabwe. In that match, India was struggling at 17 for five, and Kapil Dev played an unbeaten innings of 175 runs from 138 balls, including 16 fours and six sixes, leading India to victory by 31 runs.
Shastri didn’t hesitate to liken Maxwell’s performance to Kapil Dev’s and expressed his admiration on the social media platform of X (formerly X), saying, “Stunning. Reminds me of Kaps of 83.”

After the match, Glenn Maxwell revealed his satisfaction in making the most of the opportunity after failing in similar situations before. He was particularly proud of remaining unbeaten and partnering with Pat Cummins to secure the win, despite Australia being in deep trouble.
Numerous cricketing figures also took to social media to praise Maxwell’s innings, with many considering it the best they’ve ever witnessed. What made Maxwell’s performance stand out even more was his physical struggles, as he battled back spasms and muscle cramps during the match. He had to lie down on the ground and receive treatment from the team physio, causing halts in play on several occasions.
Sachin Tendulkar also shared his admiration on social media, calling it the best ODI innings he has ever seen and applauding Maxwell’s ability to turn the match around despite the immense pressure.
