Rohit Sharma Told BCCI Officials, ‘If You Want Me For T20 World Cup, Tell Me Now’: Report

Post the conclusion of the ODI World Cup 2023, the focus now shifts to the T20 World Cup set to happen in United States Of America (USA) and West Indies next year. While India missed out on a golden opportunity to lift a World title after losing to Australia in the final on November 19 in Ahmedabad, the management now have to take a quick call on what will be their course of action for the next opportunity to do so.

For beginners, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has extended the contract of Rahul Dravid as the head coach and the support staff under him. Dravid’s contract had come to an end with the ODI World Cup. While it looked like India would be happy with Hardik Pandya as the captain in the T20 World Cup 2024, a freak injury to Hardik Pandya forced the management to consider their options, especially after the manner in which Rohit led from the front in the ODI World Cup.

When the selectors had an elaborate meeting with Dravid and Rohit Sharma, who joined the meeting in New Delhi via a video call, a report carried by Dainik Jagran now claims that Rohit clearly asked the selectors if they wanted him to be the captain for the marquee event next year. ‘If you want to select me for the T20 World Cup then tell me now how to go about it,’ said Rohit in the meeting as narrated by a BCCI official present in the meeting to the Hindi daily.

Meanwhile, Rohit was not named in India’s white-ball squads for the South Africa series and the Board informed that both Rohit and Virat Kohli have actually opted for a break and have made themselves unavailable for the white-ball leg of India’s tour of South Africa. However, a report carried by the same publication has hinted that even as Rohit remains in plans for the T20 World Cup, with the emergence of options like Ishan Kishan, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Shubman Gill, Kohli might not be able to break into that top-order.
