Sri Lanka’s Chamari Athapaththu Sings Indian National Anthem During WPL 2024 Opener: WATCH

The Women’s Premier League (WPL) turned out to be a nail-biting one as it went all the way down to the wire. In the end of it all, it was Mumbai Indians who ended up beating the Delhi Capitals through debutant Sajeevan Sajana’s last-ball six. As a result of that shot, MI won the match by 4 wickets, an effort which meant DC star Alice Capsey’s all-round effort (75 runs and 2 wickets) went in vain.

While the match itself was worth all the hype, an off the field action from UP Warriorz player Chamari Athapaththu also captured the attention of the fans. Athapaththu was a late joinee at the franchise and joined as a replacement for Lauren Bell. Despite hailing from Sri Lanka, Athapaththu was spotted singing the Indian nation anthem when DC and MI lined up ahead of match number 1 of WPL 2024.

The video of Athapaththu singing the Indian National anthem was shared by her franchise UP Warriorz.

Chamari Athapaththu Great Signing For Us: UP Warriorz Captain Alyssa Healy

UP Warrirorz captain termed Chamari’s late addition as a wonderful signing for the franchise and said that it would be a difficult conversation in the management to decide to Playing 11 especially with so many overseas players but only four slots available.

“I think it’s a great signing for us. Obviously, having depth in our side with both bat and ball was obviously really important. And to add Chamari to that list of names that we’ve already got was a real great opportunity for us. It’s going to be a difficult conversation for management as to who is playing the XI,” she told the reporters at a pre-match press conference.

Warriors will begin their campaign against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Saturday (February 24).
